Project Management Training

Learn how to effectively lead projects

Staff members were often requested to lead business and organizational projects without formal Project Management training.

This training workshop helps staff learn how to apply project management principles and techniques. Staff self-organize into small cohorts and complete a 'simulated project' that they are responsible for leading during the workshop.   During the workshop, there are facilitated class discussions and cohort activities.

I re-designed in-person workshop to support virtual instructor-led delivery.   The workshop was virtually delivered over multiple sessions over a two-week period to minimize impacts to operations and provide spaced learning for staff.

The Design Process

Initial Design

The initial design of this project started as a massive canvas created in Mural. I knew re-designing this workshop to a virtual delivery format would be complex so I wanted a visual outline of the workshop that would identify various components of the learner experience.

The outline enabled the project team and I to better identify the organization and re-sequencing of items based on change in delivery format.  The visual outline supported creative design ideation with course facilitators.

Facilitator Guides

After the high-level outline for the workshop was finalized in Mural, I transitioned into drafting a high-level design (HLD) document for each workshop session.

The design identified timing and flow of everything occurring in the session, the transitions between the workshop facilitators, web event producer, lecture, and small group activities.

The outline was collaboratively finalized with key project members thru weekly creative design meetings that I led. The team and I would work thru complexity associated with virtual delivery format.

Content Development

Workshop materials were originally printed and provided to participants at the start of the workshop. As part of the transition to virtual delivery format, I designed course companion website that participants would access before, during, and after the workshop.

The course companion website had the following elements:

  • detailed course and session outlines

  • small group exercise scenario instructions

  • glossary of project management

  • downloadable project management templates

  • individual workshop session recordings gallery

  • instructor presentation slides

  • curated post-workshop learning resources

Graphic Design

I designed reusable Mural whiteboard template to the organization of the workshop in virtual delivery format.

The design concept of classroom and breakout rooms provided familiarity and supported the production of small cohort group outputs produced during the workshop.

I collaborated with other visual designers on the use and licensing of iconography including avatars and images.  I completed a visual collaboration training certification course to enhance my understanding of techniques and methods with facilitating collaboration using drawing tools such as Mural.
