Enabling Psychological Safety
Learn importance of building safety on your team
Psychological safety is extremely important for developing high performing teams. I was responsible for providing coaching to several departmental teams adopting Agile ways of working. One major factor that determines speed or velocity at which teams will transform is the level of psychological safety with their team and organization.
I aimed to create training materials to introduce Psychological Safety to teams, helping them grasp its significance and learn ways to foster it. The videos were provided standalone resources and incorporated into online training course, Enabling Psychological Safety on Teams, that I have developed using Articulate Rise and Storyline.
As part of my continued curiosity and growth mindset, I wanted to examine the benefits and role AI tools could provide to instructional design and video creation processes. Obviously, this is just the tip of iceberg with AI, but it would help me with evaluating impacts and process improvements in my own work. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools I utilized in this project were ChatGPT and Synthesia.

The Design Process
Ideation & Script Development
I utilized ChatGPT for the initial ideation of potential storylines for a situational video I was developing for the online training course. Here is the initial prompt provided to ChatGPT.
“Give me 5 ideas for stories about ways to enable psychological safety on work teams. For
each idea, tell me the names of 2 or more characters and the issue they are experiencing.”

I reviewed and selected one of the short stories for further elaboration and development. I provided additional background context about the characters in the ChatGPT prompt.
“Maria and James work in a high-pressure environment where mistakes are not openly discussed. The team struggles with communication and trust. Maria feels isolated in her leadership role, and James is afraid to share his ideas or ask questions, fearing he might be seen as incompetent. The story explores how the team can build trust and open communication channels, fostering a safe environment for sharing thoughts and concerns.”
From there, I began customizing the story and accompanying script. When designing learning experiences, I focus on making them relatable, as it's crucial for learners to personally connect with a situation. So, I focused the script around an relatable workplace situation involving late work from a colleague.
I shared my initial draft with training colleagues for review and feedback. The initial draft of the video design document which was then shared with key course stakeholders for review. A sample of the document for the opening sequence video is provided below.

AI Video Production
After the video design was finalized, I transitioned into developing the video using AI video creation tool, Synthesia. Synthesia provides capabilities to develop the video based on a variety of inputs including the script and produce the video using lifelike avatars.
Avatars were reviewed and selected to play the part of David, Team Lead and Sarah, Analyst as well as a Narrator to setup the scenario. Office and conference room scenes, along with animated text, were included in the video layouts. The AI-enabled script was manually adjusted with pauses and avatar gestures like head nods and eye movements.
The video was shared with subject matter experts for review and feedback. The finalized video was then divided into four segments. The opening video establishes the overall context following by subsequent videos of the conversation following by a summary video recapping key take-aways.
Background music and scene transitions were incorporated into each of the video segments. The videos were published on the Synthesia platform. The opening video was directly added into Storyline in order to support some triggers associated with the Storyline interface. The other videos segments were incorporated via embed code.

Opening Video
eLearning Development
With the AI-generated video segments incorporated into Articulate Storyline, I began working on the design of the interface for the learner. Since the Storyline element was being added to course developed in Articulate Rise, I setup Storyline formatting (e.g. fonts, buttons, colors) to be consistent with formatting elements in Articulate Rise at the very start of the project.
The next step was to decide how the learner would be presented with the situational video and navigate its various segments. The primary display would be the opening video segment, presented along with a series of horizontal buttons beneath the video player. This provides accessible and familiar navigation for learners.
After the opening video segment completes, a trigger would activate the buttons for the viewing the other segments. Since this was not compliance related training, enforcement of viewing segments was not enabled.
I then incorporated the use of True/False variables to track learner's completion of the video segments. The change in variable would enables a trigger that changes the visibility of a hidden checkmark on the button navigation.
